Meet the Bluefin Tuna – one of the fastest predators in the ocean. Built for speed, these fish have retractable fins to charge through the water at up to 50mph.
Bluefin Tuna are skilled predators, hunting by sight with the sharpest vision of any bony fish. Their diet consists of a wide range of fish and invertebrates. Similarly, Bluefin Tuna are a food source for wide variety of predators…not limited to sea dwellers. That’s right, they are a highly sought after food source for us humans as well!
Bluefin Tuna are regarded as a delicious treat in the raw food market, particularly prized for sushi and sashimi. Unfortunately, their high demand has led to overfishing, and populations are decreasing rapidly.
Although these fish contribute to the livelihoods of many people, we must also respect their place in the ocean’s eco-system. Their top spot in the ocean’s food chain helps maintain balance among other species’ populations.
As overfishing continues, despite populations declining to critically low numbers, we must take action. Voice your concerns about overfishing to Fisheries Management organizations and conservation organizations to ensure the Bluefin Tuna sticks around for good.
